Bandeira de uma nação imaginária
Urubuqueçaba é uma pequena ilha de cerca de 2000m² situada na divisa entre Santos e São Vicente, no litoral paulista. Conhecida pela presença de urubus, gaivotas e outras aves marítimas, a ilha também abriga vegetação densa e animais peçonhentos. O movimento das marés, junto à geografia do local, torna o acesso difícil, o que contribui para o seu ar de isolamento e mistério.
O nome vem do tupi e significa “pouso dos urubus” — uma descrição precisa de sua função ecológica, mas que também carrega um simbolismo potente. Desde a infância, essa ilha me despertava encantamento. Próxima, mas inatingível, ela parecia um território mágico. Já mais velho, passei a brincar com a ideia de fundar ali uma nação insular.
A partir dessa fantasia, nasceu o desejo de criar uma bandeira: um símbolo que condensasse a paisagem e os afetos. O projeto visual da bandeira incorpora seis elementos centrais: a ilha, o urubu, o sol, o cruzeiro do sul e a faixa de areia. Juntos, esses signos formam uma narrativa visual que expressa o espírito de Urubuqueçaba como lugar de travessia, repouso e imaginação.

Flag of an Imaginary Nation
Urubuqueçaba is a small island of about 2,000 square meters, located at the boundary between the cities of Santos and São Vicente, on the coast of São Paulo. Known for its population of vultures, seagulls, and other seabirds, the island is also home to dense vegetation and venomous animals. The shifting tides and the geography of the site make access difficult, which contributes to its air of isolation and mystery.
The name comes from Tupi and means “resting place of the vultures” — a precise ecological description, yet also a potent symbol. Since childhood, this island has fascinated me. Close yet unreachable, it seemed like a magical territory. As I grew older, I began to imagine founding an insular nation there.
From this fantasy came the desire to create a flag — a symbol that could condense both landscape and emotion. The visual design of the flag incorporates six central elements: the island, the vulture, the sun, the Southern Cross constellation, and the strip of sand. Together, these symbols form a visual narrative that expresses the spirit of Urubuqueçaba as a place of crossing, rest, and imagination.
